World War One, “the war to end all wars”, this most brutal and bloody of conflicts, with it’s mechanization, abandonment of war ethics and reckless political outcomes, was where the seeds were sown for all modern warfare.

A large number of survivors from this “Hell on Earth” were afflicted with horrendous physical injuries and many also bore the hidden scars of deep trauma. However, official censorship and societal pressures forced them to suffer in silence.

 

Only in recent years have veterans (now all sadly gone) felt free to speak of their experiences and to express their opinions.
